Smoky Cream

Smoky Cream is a black-based coat with two copies of the cream-allele. Like cremello and perlino, smoky cream horses have a very pale cream coat, pink skin, and light blue eyes. They are also called: double cream horses.

Smoky Cream

Looks Like (Phenotype)

Smoky Cream horses often appear almost white, but their coat usually has a cooler or slightly greyish cream shade compared to cremello or perlino. The mane and tail are also pale cream. The skin is pink, and the eyes are pale to light blue.

💡
Tip
It is very difficult to tell smoky cream apart from cremello or perlino just by looking. Because these differences are small and vary between horses, genetic testing is generally required to confirm smoky cream.

Variations

  • Hue of the coat may shift slightly with the seasons
  • Some smoky creams may appear nearly white in winter and slightly creamier in summer

Behind the Colour (Genotype)

Two copies of the cream gene lighten all pigment, but because smoky cream comes from a black base, the coat has a slightly cooler tone than cremello or perlino.
