Buckskin
Buckskin is a bay-based coat that is lightened to a tan or golden colour. The horse keeps its black mane, tail and legs, which makes buckskin easy to recognise.
Looks Like (Phenotype)
A golden, tan or sandy body with a black mane, tail, and lower legs.
The tips of the ears may also appear darker.
💡
Tip
If the body is golden but the mane and legs are black, the horse is likely buckskin. If the mane and tail are pale instead, it is more likely palomino. If the horse has a dorsal stripe along the spine, look at dun instead of buckskin.

Variations
The shade of buckskin ranges widely:
- Very light, almost cream
- Warm tan or golden
- Dark buckskin, which can look close to bay
Some buckskins develop light dapples, and the coat often changes with the seasons.

Game Tip
In Horse Reality, you can compare different variations of buckskin, such as a light variation, golden or dark buckskin side by side, which might help train your eye to recognise shade differences.

Behind the Colour (Genotype)
The horse needs to have a bay-based coat. Adding one copy of the cream gene lightens the red part of that bay coat, while the black points remain dark.
