About Us
Horse Coats is here to show you what each horse coat colour looks like without extra fuss. A simple visual reference.
It can be surprisingly difficult to find a place where you can look at horse coats and compare colours. Sometimes you simply want to know: "Is this horse bay or chestnut?" without reading long articles or searching for the perfect reference photo. That is why we created Horse Coats, as an easy reference for horse coat colours.
When we say 'we', we mean Studio Deloryan. The team developing the realistic horse breeding game Horse Reality. For the game, we continuously study a mixture of horse genetics books, academic material, breeder notes and many photographs of real horses. Our team includes an equine genetics researcher and artists who specialise in drawing horses. This allows us to create digital artworks of horses and their colours that are represented true to life.
Since we already create and maintain this material for our game, it made sense to share part of it here as a public resource. It is good to know that our intention is not to explain genetics in depth on this website. If you wish to learn how colours are inherited, why some foals lighten or darken, or how coat patterns change over time, we recommend registering for Horse Reality. In the game, you can observe genetics in action by breeding your horses, and our detailed wiki explains much more about how it works in real life and in-game.
Horse Coats is simply here to show what each colour looks like, without extra fuss.
We hope it is useful for anyone who wants to recognise horse coats more easily, whether you are new to the subject, an artist, a breeder or simply curious. If this resource helps you identify the coats you see with a bit more confidence, then it has done what we hoped for!
